D.I.Y. Hair Smoothing Leave-on Serum

Most of us are crazy about D.I.Y. cosmetics and products but I’m not sure how many of them work or how many of them are actually good for us. Few days ago I came up with this D.I.Y. hair serum and thought of trying it out and it actually worked. This serum is very simple and the ingredients needed are really available at reasonable rate. The best part of this serum is that it works and has no side effects.

I made a small batch of this serum and poured it into a reusable glass bottle, spray bottle may work if it is diluted into water type of consistency which I did not do. It has a nice fragrance and you can use essential oils of your choice for the fragrance you need.

Hair smoothing serum

 

Ingredient’s needed:

  • Aloe Vera gel
  • Vitamin E oil capsules
  • Grape-seed oil

 

Method:

  • In the bottle add Aloe Vera gel as much as needed and remember it’s the base of this serum. I filled almost 3/4th of the bottle with it.
  • Add 3-4 capsules of vitamin E oil to it.
  • Add few drops of grape-seed oil. It adds the fragrance as well as has other properties as it is an essential oil. Any other essential oil can be added in place of this for fragrance. I added around 1 tsp of it to the above mixture.
  • Mix all the contents till it blends. The Aloe Vera gel may lose its transparency and look whitish after it’s mixed and that’s completely normal. Don’t worry the consistency may look thick but once you pour it on your palm to apply, it you will realize how light and non-sticky it is.

 

How to use:

It can be used on dry hair but I prefer using it after I wash and condition my hair. I towel dry it till the excess water is absorbed by the towel and then apply this serum on semi-wet hair. pour little in your palm and rub it, apply it on your hair and comb through it with your fingers.

Patanjali Aloe Vera Gel

 

  • I used Patanjali Aloe Vera gel but you can use any store bought gel. I did not use it directly from plant because the humidity here may spoil it if I keep it for a long time. Some people also have allergy so please don’t take a risk. I didn’t apply this on my scalp but if you want to then please do a patch test before applying it on your scalp.

 

  • Coconut oil or Jojoba oil or a mixture of it can be used in place of grape-seed oil. You can use other oils along with the above mentioned ingredients but just keep in mind that the oil content should be 5% or less of that of Aloe Vera gel or it may make your hair oily and sticky.
  • I need not tell you the benefits of the ingredients as you all may obviously know how we already use the ingredients in various ways for their skin or hair care or styling or in cosmetics.
  • This is not a heat resistant serum, so do not use this in place of hair resistant spray. I didn’t find any bad effects in it, all it does is soften the hair and tames your hair if you’re tying it or styling it.
  • I noticed that it reduced the tangles and made my hair manageable.
  • People with wavy hair will surely be happy as it makes your hair manageable and you can tie it easily. Instead of oil which can be sticky at times and makes your face oily during summers but this serum will be blessing for such hair. I have wavy hair and this helped me tuck in those lose strands and soften my hair making my hair smooth.
  • If you’re worried about rough hair then this is definitely for you.
  • As it hardly contains chemicals other than preservatives in Aloe Vera gel (if any) this is much better for our hair than our other leave-on conditioners.

Hershey’s Chocolate Mug cake for two

I’m sure you must be wondering why I named my chocolate mug cake and that’s because I added Hershey’s chocolate syrup before baking the cake. I’m sure many of you are chocolate lovers and crave chocolate but too lazy to bake a cake or cookies or some maybe lazy to go to the store to buy pastries. This recipe is really quick and hardly takes 5mins if you have all necessary ingredients available at home.

This recipe is really easy and it’s best when you share it with your friend or partner. I shared mine with my younger brother. Made it for Raksha Bandhan. We enjoyed this gooey, chocolatey, moist mug cake within 5 mins of dreaming about it. So next time you crave chocolate all you have to do is mix the ingredients, pour in the mug or moulds and microwave it for 1-2mins. Ta-Da! It’s ready to eat.

I love cooking and baking but baking a Chocolate cake is my favourite. It uplifts my mood when I’m upset and repairs all the bad or upsetting thoughts I ever had. The best reason to bake a chocolate cake is that it makes me as well as the one with whom I share it with happy. Another best reason to bake a chocolate cake is to gift it or make it on a special occasion or even when someone is angry or upset with you. Chocolate cake is the remedy for all such problems :p So here is my moist chocolate cake recipe:

So here is my moist chocolate cake recipe:

 

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 Tbsp        Flour
  • 3 Tbsp        Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp        Cocoa powder
  • 1/4 Tbsp     Baking soda
  • 3 Tbsp         Milk
  • 2 Tbsp         Oil
  • 1 Tsp            Hersey’s chocolate chips
  • 1 Tsp            Hershey’s chocolate syrup

 

METHOD

  1. Mix flour, cocoa powder, baking soda or baking powder, sugar or sugar powder
  2. Add oil and milk. Mix well to make a smooth batter.
  3. Add chocolate chips and mix.
  4. Pour the batter into two small mugs or muffin moulds.
  5. Chocolate syrup can be added on top of the batter without mixing before baking OR it can be added after baking. It depends on how you like it.
  6. Mug cake can be had warm or cold. So depending on your liking you can add chocolate syrup. I added it before baking and that’s why in the photo you can see bubbles on the top of the cake because chocolate syrup boils at high temperature
  7. Bake it at high temperature for 1-2mins in microwave mode. I baked it at 320 degrees Celcius. It can be baked at 160 or 180 degrees too but it will take more than 1 or 2 minutes. You need to keep an eye on it because it bakes very quickly.

Rasgulla’s – Special Dessert of East India — July 20, 2016

Rasgulla’s – Special Dessert of East India

Rasgulla means juicy balls and these are made from milk and steamed in sugar syrup. It can be consumed when it is warm or when it’s chilled. The sweetness of this recipe can be as per your choice.

Long back I had noted down Rasgulla recipe in my diary where I note down other recipes but never even went through it. But one day while eating store bought Rasgulla I realised I didn’t want to pay a lot for those tiny pieces which isn’t sufficient when I share it with my family so I went back to that book and thought of making them at home. Since a year or more I have been making Rasgulla’s at home and they are sufficient for all of us. They aren’t costly and not very time consuming. Once you get a hang of it, It’s easy and less time consuming. It takes me less than 45 minutes to make them.

You need fresh Homemade Cottage Cheese to make Rasgulla’s. If you dont know how to make cottage cheese or Paneer then click it and you will be directed to my previous post where you can learn how to make Paneer. Hope you try it out and enjoy these sweet juicy balls.

 

INGREDIENTS

Homemade Paneer made from 1 litre milk

Sugar  –   1/2 cup

Water –   1 1/2 cup

Few strands of saffron or cardmom pod (optional/whichever you like)

Flat bottom pan with lid or cooker

 

METHOD

  1. Strain the paneer and wash it twice or thrice. Remove excess water and tie it tightly in a muslin cloth. Let the water drain out of it either by hanging it or by keeping heavy weight on it. Let it rest that way for atleast 15-20 minutes
  2. Remove the paneer from muslin cloth and knead it for a minute or two till smooth soft dough is formed. Like shown in the picture belowIMG_20160814_090224973
  3. Make round balls of any size and remember that after cooking it doubles or triples in size. Keep the dough and balls in semi-wet cloth so that it doesnt dry off when your making more balls.
  4. Make sugar syrup and mix it well. I added few strands of Saffron (Kesar) for taste. Let the syrup boil; after the first boil add the balls and close the lid. Let the Rasgulla’s steam for 5-6 minutes and then open the lid and check whether the balls have increased in size.IMG_20160813_131309977
  5. Let it cool and refridgerate it for atleast 2-3 hours. If you make it in the morning it will be ready to serve for lunch.

 

I prefer consuming it when chilled. I observed that after few hours of refridgerating they absorbed more syrup and increased in size. The colour of the syrup in the below picture is bit yellowish due to Saffron. I kept it over night and this is how it looked after 24 hours of preparation.

RASGULLA’S BECOME MORE JUICY AFTER REFRIDGERATING OVERNIGHT

 

 

NOTE: Natural colours or flavours can be added to paneer while kneading. But if your making more than one flavours or colours then cook them separately. For flavours little jelly or custurd powder can be added.

Homemade Cottage Cheese

Making cottage cheese is very easy and all you need is two ingredients. It’s commonly known as paneer and almost everyone loves paneer dishes. It’s used in western as well as in Indian dishes.

I & my brother love Paneer and I make it frequently with either fresh milk or leftover milk. It’s a good source of protein and calcium along with little of vitamin A, vitamin B-12 and magnesium.

 

INGREDIENTS

1 ltr.           Milk

2-3 tsp      vinegar or lemon juice

 

METHOD

  1. Keep the utensil with milk on stove and let it heat.
  2. Once it comes to boil switch off the stove and add the vinegar or lemon juice
  3. The milk curdles after adding vinegar. Strain it with the help of strainer or muslin cloth or unused handkerchief or kitchen cloth.
  4. Either tie it tightly and hang it for the water to completely drain or just tie it and put a heavy weight stone on it and keep aside for at least 15-20 minutes
  5. After the water is drained, open the cloth and cut the cottage cheese into pieces or use it as required in the recipe.

Note that 1 litre of milk can make around 200-250gms of cottage cheese

Staying away for months is possible…

I know everyone must be wondering how can two love birds stay away for a long time. Everyone always asks me how do I manage to stay away for so long and wants tips from me. Yes, I do miss my love a lot and think of him often but the belief that ‘we are going to be together soon’ keeps us sane.

I know it’s tough when I feel lonely and when I am upset. Vodafone keeps me in touch with him because of their scheme of unlimited calls to any one number with very little charge. I’m thankful to Vodafone for that even though they bill me a lot.

So coming back to how to stay connected and happy even when lovebirds are far away physically. I would like to tell you it isn’t easy at the starting but you get used to it when both of you learn how to keep each other happy.

 

STAY FOCUSED

Staying focused on our goals helps us to be on the right path. It doesn’t just refer to our educational or career goals, it also refers to our relationship goals.

 

DREAM TOGETHER

Discuss future plans and dream together about what you both want to do when you get a chance to meet. Hope is a huge thing which keeps us together. It’s something which motivates you and keeps you going when you feel lonely.

 

CONTACT REGULARLY

Keep texting, audio or video calling and sending e-mails whenever possible. Once in a way especially during special occasions like birthdays & anniversary’s try writing hand-written letters. Though letters are old fashioned once in a way writing them makes us preserve them.

 

PLAN A GET TOGETHER 

At least once in few months try to meet and hang out if it’s not possible to meet every month. You learn to live every moment in life when you get so little time together. You start valuing your time. I know that’s the worst way of learning the value of time.

 

BE FRANK AND SHARE

When you be frank and hide nothing from each other it builds trust. Try to spend at least few minutes every day  talking about each others day and your thoughts.

Peanut Butter Ice Cream — May 26, 2016

Peanut Butter Ice Cream

I’m sure you will agree with me that ice cream is something that almost everyone loves and is suitable for every occasion.

Craving for chocolate, cake and ice cream is healthy if you are passionate about cooking and eating :p

I hope you have a sweet tooth; This recipe is really gonna make your mouth water and make you forget about your diet. So try it at home and it’s very easy to make because you mostly need to pick out ready made food and mix it to make a wonderful snack or dessert.

 

So lets get started with the ingredients needed (I’m gonna mention the measurements here but then you can add or deduct the ingredients and measurements)

5 cups   vanilla ice cream

1/3 cup  Hershey’s chocolate chips

8         Reese’s peanut butter cups

6 tbsp   Caramel sauce

6 tbsp   Hershey’s chocolate syrup

1/4 cup  Chocolate cake (crumbled roughly; already posted the recipe; optional)

1/2 cup peanut butter

 

Method:

Step 1 – keep all the ingredients ready and start with microwaving peanut butter for about 15-30 seconds (until it melts)

Step 2 – add a layer of ice cream as the base in the container which you are going to use to freeze the ice cream, then add a layer of peanut butter. Sprinkle chopped Hershey’s Reese’s peanut buttercups, chocolate chips and cookies/chocolate cake (optional). Pour some caramel and chocolate syrup

Step 3 – add the layers as you like and freeze it for two hours. It’s ready to eat after that.

 

P.S. I have used Hershey’s products but you can use the one of your choice. Cake, cookies, peanut butter, peanut butter chocolate, vanilla ice cream and caramel can be made at home. Instead of Reese’s you can add chopped Cadbury chocolate.

Delectably mouthwatering chocolate cake

If there was no chocolate on earth it would have been difficult to handle bad days and mood swings. Whether women or children, old or young everyone craves chocolate.

Kids birthday party? you can bake these easily and then add frosting to it to make it look attractive. The cake can be cut into small pieces and served as miniature cakes or can be served with chocolate sauce.

Chocolate cake smells heavenly when freshly baked, I usually prefer having them warm with chocolate sauce and that is why I add less sugar while baking. People who normally consume less sugar can use this recipe to bake a mouthwatering chocolate cake.

The ingredients mentioned below is for a small batch. It’s perfect for small parties and can be served with tea, coffee or hot chocolate milk. the below ingredients maybe doubled to make a bigger cake.

My brother loves chocolate and because he is a vegetarian I always try out new recipes which doesn’t contain egg or meat.

This is one of the easiest recipe you may find and even kids could bake with little help from elders. I’m sure everyone would love this cake. But please remember to check the sweetness of the batter before baking so that you can add a little more if needed or it can be baked as mentioned below and then caramel or chocolate topping can be added. It can be had the way you like it. With fruits, toppings, chocolate chips, ice cream or whipped cream. Hope you enjoy baking and finishing up the cake.

 

Ingredients:

1⅓ cups all purpose flour

1 cup sugar

⅓ cup cocoa powder (sweetened or unsweetened or both combined.)

¼ cup chocolate chips (I used bittersweet with 60% cocoa.)

¼ cup chopped dry fruits (I used cashews, walnuts, almonds, pecans and pistachios.)

¼ tsp baking powder

¼ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

½ cup vegetable oil

½ cup water

½ tsp chocolate essence

 

Method:

Step 1- take a baking pan and apply thin layer of butter or oil using brush and sprinkle some flour on it. Parchment sheet can also be used but that also needs to be sprayed with thin coat of oil. So now the pan is ready.

Step 2- Use a sieve to sift all the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl at once. This process helps in mixing the ingredients properly. Mix it once again using spatula

Step 3- Switch on the oven or microwave and preheat for about 10 minutes at 100◦ C

Step 4- Add the wet ingredients and mix, the consistency of batter will be thick. Add the dry fruits and chocolate chips to it.

Step 5– Pour the cake batter in the pan and transfer it to the oven once preheated. Bake it for about 45 minutes or till its baked. You can poke it with the fork or knife or tooth pick and check whether its baked before switching off the oven. After the oven is switched off let the cake rest in it for 5 minutes because the cooking process is still going on. after removing it from the oven let it cool for about 10 minutes and then it can be cut into pieces of any size or cookie cutters can be used to give it a shape.
